when basic theories meet reality -
from researcher to strategy consultant
Already while studying space physics, I was influenced by people who thought in an analytical way and were very logic-minded. Being good was a function of knowledge, the ability to recognize patterns and interdependencies, structure and creativity in finding solutions.
The foundation of a music publishing company alongside the PhD program was a learning experiment. I had to choose between the academic and the business world.
My path led me to The Boston Consulting Group (BCG), one of the leading strategy consulting firms. In the eight years of my work as a management consultant, I gained experience in numerous industries (consumer and industrial goods, automotive, media, financial services, public service, private equity and many others) and various cultural environments.
The main topics were post-merger integrations and implementation-intensive "go-to-market" strategies. At BCG I was also extensively involved in training and recruitment tasks. As an interviewer, I conducted over 300 job interviews.
more focus on relationships beyond the facts -
from strategy consultant to executive coaching
In addition to a clear focus on "professional services", I have learned to appreciate the stimulation of dealing with people with a quick grasp. People with a strong will to make a difference and to develop themselves continuously.
At that time we generated numerous relevant insights and helped to implement most of the derived measures. It became increasingly clear to me though that the impact of the implemented measures depends much more on the needs and convictions of the people in the organization than on the rational behind the measures.
So there was something to learn again. Something about "people" and "systems".
As a coach and consultant - trained at the TRIAS Institute for Coaching, Supervision and Organizational Development - I am now certified as a "Senior Coach" by the IOBC (International Organization for Business Coaching) and the DBVC (German Federal Association for Coaching) and recognized by the professional associations BSO, DGSV, OeVS.
I have been supporting individuals, groups and organizations in their individual development processes since 2006. Again and again I experience - even first-hand - what it means to question deep beliefs, habits, principles and judgements that have manifested over a long time. And to strengthen the ability to perceive oneself openly and honestly. My respect for everyone who is walking on this path is still growing day by day.
what else matters -
from executive coaching to life
In order to be really helpful, one needs a good sense for what the coachee's concern is really all about. It is not always easy to find out. And it is often even more difficult to then determine which intervention is most helpful - i.e. relevant, provocative and just about appreciated.
Of course, coaching is also a craft and requires a well-filled tool case. I consider myself a generalist and I am convinced that this characteristic is often more helpful than specific expertise. I therefore do not believe in labels like "career coach", "communication coach" etc.
The resources I bring into the advisory situations are all the experiences I have collected in life. The two most important areas besides my job are my family and music.
In the family, I learn new lessons every day about relationships, imprints and influences through upbringing, decision-making processes, conflicts and negotiations in dealing with my wife, my daughters and our dog.
And as a keyboarder in two bands (prognostic.rocks
and tommy-who.de), in addition to the necessary self-discipline and motivation during daily practice, I am constantly learning more about the "flow" in a team, the necessary presence on stage, and the contact with the audience.
